FAQ

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people consider becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. Either you can work in a shop that is owned by another person or start your own business.

If you choose to work at a store, you need to join a union. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

Register with the government if you want to open your garage. After you have registered, you will need to meet certain standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who can specialize in a particular area of the car. They might specialize in one area, such as brakes and tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

You might also consider the vehicle type you repair, and whether extra labor is charged.

How long is an automotive mechanic apprenticeship

It takes approximately three years to complete an automotive mechanic apprenticeship. This includes two year at school as well as two years as an apprenticeship. The first year is used to learn all aspects of the trade including safety procedures and theory. You'll also learn the safe and efficient use of tools during this first year. After the completion of the first year, you will spend another year on the job training. Here you'll gain valuable experience in different trades. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The last year of your program will be spent earning qualifications and becoming certified. These include NVQs or National Vocational Qualifications. These are earned after passing exams that cover specific topics in the industry. There are also HNCs (Higher National Certificates), which cover general subjects like management, business administration, customer service, and more. For those interested in pursuing certain trades, City & Guilds certificates are available.

Is it hard to get work as an auto mechanic?

It is possible. Many garages advertise their vacancies online, and many people apply just because they think it might be fun. To get your foot in front of the door, try applying for a few positions to see if any accept student applications. Alternatively, you could ask friends and family if they know anyone who works in the industry. They might be happy to recommend someone.

Is it hard to be an apprentice mechanic?

It's not simple, but you can learn quickly and there are many avenues for advancement.

You will need patience and perseverance. It is also important to know how you can fix vehicles, trucks, or motorcycles.

Customers and relatives can exert a lot on you. But, you shouldn’t be pressured to make any decisions you aren’t happy with.

This is a career that you might enjoy if you are passionate about fixing cars. You can make a decent living and build your business.

You might choose to take a different route. You might consider becoming a technician in this instance.

This means that you can use your technical knowledge to help other workers. This could be a way to help technicians with their problems or to teach them new techniques.

Another option is to become an advisor in service. When customers bring their cars into a garage, they will receive advice and assistance.

Your decision will be based on what your priorities are. There are many choices available and you can choose what suits you best.

How do I fix my vehicle as a hobby?

It's a great hobby to take on if you are passionate about cars. You can learn to fix them, buy them parts, and even sell them. If you are looking for something more, it would be an excellent hobby.

It's difficult to make this a fulltime job. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work. And you'll need to invest a lot of money too.

It is best to avoid getting involved in car accidents unless you have good reasons.

What qualifications do I need to become a mechanic?

To become a mechanic, you'll need to pass a series of exams. These exams include:

  • A general knowledge assessment
  • A practical exam
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests are meant to help you grasp the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and physics, before you begin your journey as a mechanic.

Once you pass these tests you can become a mechanic. But, you will still need an apprenticeship. This will involve training in the trade.

You'll need to attend classes and workshops to learn everything you need to know about repairing vehicles. Working alongside skilled mechanics is also a must.

You'll need a high level of concentration and attention to detail if you want to succeed as a mechanic. Repairs to vehicles require you to pay attention to every detail.

You'll need patience and persistence to become a successful mechanic. If you don't like to follow instructions, then this may not be the right career path for you.

If you enjoy cars and fixing them, this job could be a good fit for you.

Can I work as an auto mechanic without a degree? Can I do part-time studies?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Most employers prefer candidates who have studied for a full degree rather than those who haven't. It shows that your efforts have been put in and you have succeeded.

This doesn't necessarily mean you can't continue to work while studying. Some universities let students complete their coursework in the summer and then continue their studies during the school year. Some universities allow students to take part-time classes throughout the year.

How To

How to Become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
