Many companies will hire students straight out of college. You should start looking for employment as soon as you are able to continue your studies part-time.

After your education is complete, you will probably need some training in order to become an automotive technician.

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. Once you have registered, certain standards will be enforced.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics that specialize in one aspect of the vehicle. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. This allows employers to pick the right candidates for their jobs.

Some dealerships recruit students right out of school. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, they focus on high-quality customer service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
