FAQ

How can I fix my car as a hobby?

If you are interested in cars, why not take it on as a hobby? You could learn how to repair them, buy parts for them, sell them or just enjoy them. It's a fun hobby that you can do if it interests you.

But it is not easy to turn this into your full-time occupation. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. It will also require a large amount of investment.

You may not be able to have an emotional connection with cars unless there is a valid reason.

What is the difference between an automotive technician and a mechanic?

Both are related, but they are not the same. Both a mechanic and an automotive technician can repair cars.

A mechanic needs to be able and quick to use their manual dexterity. A mechanic should also be able accurately diagnose and repair problems.

A technician in automotive is more technical than a mechanic. They need to be able use tools such drills and wrenches, and read blueprints.

They should also be capable of safely performing complex procedures. They must also be familiarized in different types and electrical systems.

They must also be able comprehend how the various parts interrelate with one another.

As a result, a mechanic usually earns less money than an automotive technician. Both careers have many options.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. It's the easiest way for most people to get started. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

You'll be ready for work once you have completed the training.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After registering, you'll be required to meet certain standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They might specialize in one area, such as brakes and tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages are not associated with any one dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

You can switch jobs easily. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. New employees are usually apprentices when they first get hired. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
